The Strait of Hormuz crisis escalated after Iran dismissed a US-supported draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), describing it as “defective” and “politically driven”. Tehran stated the proposal would not resolve the continuing conflict in West Asia and instead accused Washington of trying to legitimise illegal actions through the UN.
In its statement, Iran asserted that the only answer to the crisis was ending the conflict, removing the maritime blockade on Iranian ports and restoring regular movement through the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian mission also urged UN member nations to oppose the draft resolution and refrain from endorsing it.
The proposed resolution was presented by the United States together with Gulf partners including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar. It seeks to protect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply moves. The United States has accused Iran of assaults on commercial vessels, placing sea mines and endangering maritime traffic.
The crisis has additionally worsened regional instability. Reports of missile and drone attacks, strikes on ships and tensions involving Israel have increased fears of a broader conflict in the Gulf. The Israeli military also reported sirens in northern Israel after a suspected aerial intrusion.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard cautioned against any military action, claiming that efforts by former US President Donald Trump to undermine Tehran had failed. At the same time, diplomatic channels remain open, with mediators reportedly working on a possible understanding between Washington and Tehran.
The ongoing tensions have produced major global economic consequences, including higher oil prices and rising shipping costs. With the Strait of Hormuz remaining at the centre of the crisis, concerns continue to increase over global trade disruptions and regional security as international diplomatic efforts intensify.
