Special Protection Group Urgently Needs DIGs Following Return of Officers. SPG Recruitment Initiative Starts for DIG-Level IPS Officers on Central Deputation
New Delhi: In a major effort to reinforce the security framework safeguarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has contacted Chief Secretaries nationwide seeking suitable Indian Police Service (IPS) officers for deputation to the Special Protection Group (SPG).
The immediate demand is for officers holding the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG), after the recent repatriation of nearly twelve IPS officers from the SPG back to their parent cadres and services.
SPG Needs DIG-Level IPS Officers Without Delay
As per official correspondence issued by the Home Ministry around two weeks ago, the sanctioned DIG-level IPS positions within the Special Protection Group are lying vacant and must be filled on an urgent basis.
The communication was forwarded to Chief Secretaries of all states, except Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and certain Union Territories. State administrations have been instructed to circulate the vacancy details extensively among eligible IPS officers and submit nominations of interested candidates to the Ministry of Home Affairs within 30 days.
14 Years of Service Essential for Eligibility
The MHA has clarified that officers applying for deputation to the Special Protection Group as DIGs should have completed a minimum of 14 years of service in the Indian Police Service.
Along with nomination papers, state governments are required to provide:
Current vigilance clearance
Service documentation
Consent of the concerned officer
This is aimed at ensuring that only officers with unquestionable integrity and strong professional backgrounds are taken into consideration.
Why the Shortage Has Turned Serious
The shortage comes at a period when several DIG-level posts across central investigative agencies, police bodies and paramilitary organizations continue to remain vacant.
However, the situation became especially urgent after nearly a dozen officers serving in the Special Protection Group were recently sent back to their parent cadres.
Considering the SPG’s highly specialized responsibility in close protection, vacancies at the DIG level can substantially impact leadership and operational coordination.
