Amaravati: In a significant push for the capital city's expansion, the Centre is likely to approve a major infrastructure initiative—the Common Central Secretariat. The Union Urban Development Ministry has forwarded the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Union Cabinet for final sanction.
The Union Finance Ministry has already granted in-principle approval for the ₹2,534-crore initiative. Out of this, ₹1,299.08 crore has been allocated for the Secretariat complex and ₹1,234.91 crore for
General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) meant for central govt employees. The CRDA has assigned 22.53 acres: 5.53 acres for the Secretariat and 17 acres for residential towers.
The DPR approval comes after persistent efforts by chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and IT minister Nara Lokesh, who have been continuously engaging authorities in New Delhi for clearances and financial support. Their coordination with the prime minister and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman helped resolve years of delay.
The proposed Secretariat is planned as a state-of-the-art integrated complex that will accommodate multiple central govt departments under one roof, enhancing coordination and administrative effectiveness. It forms an important element of the Amaravati master plan, which seeks to build a sustainable and globally competitive greenfield capital. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) will undertake the project with emphasis on green construction practices and advanced infrastructure. Simultaneously, the state government is moving ahead with its own Secretariat towers for Heads of Departments. "The Common Central Secretariat will boost economic growth, create employment opportunities and attract investments. It demonstrates renewed Centre–state collaboration in Amaravati's development," stated TDPP leader Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu. He added that tendering and construction activities will begin after Cabinet approval.
Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently inaugurated the foundation for the finance district in Amaravati, where 15 central PSU banks and financial institutions are being established. This is regarded as the first occasion for the Centre to sanction such a project. The state govt has allotted land for all the PSU banks and the RBI regional office in Amaravati.
